Best Of the Show: “Myth-ectomy,” Technology Without Common Sense, Mentors, and Secret Smoker.

Myth-ectomy.

It’s coming! Congress tried to stop it thirty-seven times! The Affordable Care Act is on track and headed for the station and you need to know the FACTS.

Is it good? Is it bad? Will Grandma meet her demise in front of a “death panel?” Will it bankrupt the country? Is it just another give away? Is it universal healthcare? Will insurance rates be lower? Will doctors and nurses be laid off? Will it throw our healthcare system into chaos? Should we get in line for our microchip implants?

Tune in as Shayne and Casey perform a “myth-ectomy” on at least one of these questions.

Technology Without Common Sense?

RNs DeAnn McEwen and Michelle Mahon tell it like it is. EMR, or Electronic Medical Records systems, are rolling out “live” in hospitals across the country. BUT WAIT! Were nurses at the table when these systems where designed and implemented? Did these hospitals insure the safety of each patient by making sure nurses were trained and staffing was adequate? Unfortunately, the answer to all of these questions is NO. Now understand, we are not against EMRs we simply do not think it is in the patients’ best interest to throw the baby out with the bathwater, i.e. human input and oversight!

Mentors.

You might ask what PhD Karilee Halo Shames RN knows about mentoring. After all she has written three books on thyroid health, a book called The Nightingale Conspiracy and seven other medically related titles. Now Dr. Shames has a new book called Amazing Mentors, The REAL Hot Mama’s Path to Power. In it she interviews social activist Medea Benjamin, California Congresswoman, Lynn Woolsey and many other women who are strong leaders and mentors. In the process of writing the book, Dr. Shames also gets in touch with her own leadership and mentoring skills and realizes the power and importance of it all.

You can’t make this stuff up…and Joanie Greggains doesn’t either. This week on Fit Happens, she talks about the “Tissue Paper Diet.” That’s right the “tissue paper diet”…and she is NOT recommending it. This comes from  Kirstie Clements, who edited “Vogue Australia” for 13 years. She said it was not unusual for girls to become so malnourished that they had to be admitted to hospital and put on a drip. Very sad, but Joanie gets us through the story and to the other side with a light at the end of the tunnel.

And don’t miss Health Trivia or our listener’s Email Questions: Secret smoker??? Can you really be a secret smoker? If your clothes smell like Febreze and you have mint burns on your lips – maybe not!
