Best of Nurse Talk Shorts: Laughter, Tar Sands, and Viagra for Women

Try as we might to stay away from polarizing issues on our show, it seems you can’t talk about health and healthcare without touching on these controversial topics. The Keystone XL Pipeline is one of those issues. It could have a significant impact on the health of communities in […]

Summer Vacay!…A Moving Tribute. Keystone XL. ObamaCare: Good, Bad or Both?

YES, we have officially declared summer vacation here at the Nurse Talk studio. But, we are not just eating potato salad, barbecued hamburgers, hot dogs and jello salad with banana’s in it. No, we are hard at work retooling our show, our website, and our figures. When our new shows return in September you will hear some great new features. Nurse Talk takes on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) – the good, the bad and the ugly…and yes, there is a between, too. There is so much information out there that is mythical at best and crazy in its worst form. With our expert panel and our healthcare partners, each week we will discuss issues related to the ACA. Oh, and for our listeners who may be hoping ‘Obamacare’ will go away…we’ll let you know if that happens too.

Also, health and fitness expert Joanie Greggains will join us for a series of interviews with well-known health and wellness practitioners, authors and cutting edge holistic leaders.

Humor is always in the equation and that won’t change, and our new website will have interactive features so that you can chat with our hosts as we live stream the show.

So while we are away at our picnic, please enjoy a Best Of. Be safe, be happy, be healthy and keep laughing!

Nurse Talk Short | RN Staffing, Acuity and Victoria Sweet’s God’s Hotel

Nurse-to-patient ratios? What’s acuity got to do with it? On this show we visit with RN Tracy Pelletier, a med surg nurse from the Aroostook County Medical Center in Presque Isle, Maine. As Maine goes so goes the nation. Tracy says staffing levels and acuity […]

God’s Hotel. I Need a Nurse…But There Isn’t One! 89-Year-Old Goes Rogue. Or Does He?

San Francisco Giants“How about those GIANTS”, says co-host Shayne Mason. “What about them?” replies host Casey Hobbs. Disgraceful but true. It turns out neither one of them knew their own San Francisco Giants were in the national baseball playoffs! I know they’re nurses but–I also know nurses get around. Go GIANTS!

God's HotelWow! Do we have a great show coming up. A couple of months ago Casey read a book called God’s Hotel, A Doctor, A Hospital, and A Pilgrimage to the Heart of Medicine. The book was written by San Francisco physician Dr. Victoria Sweet about San Francisco’s Laguna Honda Hospital, the last almshouse in the country, a descendant of the Hôtel-Dieu (God’s Hotel) that cared for the sick in the Middle Ages. Ballet dancers and rock musicians, professors and thieves — “anyone who had fallen, or, often, leapt, onto hard times” and needed extended medical care — ended up there. Dr. Sweet ended up there herself, as a physician. And though she came for only a two-month stay, she remained for twenty years. Casey couldn’t put the book down and then couldn’t stop talking about it. So we decided to invite Dr. Sweet to talk with us about her amazing book. Read more…

All-Woman Senate Panel Moves to Ban Viagra. National Nurses. Single Payer in California. Lotsa Laughs

The show begins with Casey, “Dan as you know, we try to shy away from controversy but sometimes a gal just has to speak up. I must comment on the recent congressional hearings on contraception. First of all—I thought that train left the station in the 70’s! And can we talk? The expert panel assembled consisted of all males! “Where’s The Beef?” as our old friend Clara Peller used to say in the famous Wendy’s commercial. Without going into further detail, we wondered what it would be like—if the shoe were on the other foot—so to speak. You know, the deck being stacked to fall the other way?”

AS LUCK would have it—a little research provided us with the perfect opportunity to share just that kind of breaking news. Listen this Saturday as California State Senator Janelle Jones introduces groundbreaking legislation (Senate Bill SB 1240) that moves to criminalize the very dangerous Viagra. That’s right—Viagra. The all-woman senate panel that drafted this bill says there is mountains of evidence that Viagra should be banned! Don’t miss Senator Jones on Nurse Talk!

AND..we have an update on the very active nurses from National Nurses United. Deborah Burger always brings life and humanity to the critical healthcare issues in our country.

We’ll check in with our friend Andrew McGuire. Andrew is the Executive Director of California One Care. Cal One Care envisions a health care system where every child and every adult receives the health care they need, when they need it, and at a cost that is affordable.
