For California’s Future: Vote YES on Proposition 30!

California nurses, teachers, and responsible business individuals paid a visit to the posh St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco to shine a spotlight on the secretive wealthy donors who are bankrolling the campaign to defeat Proposition 30.

The Tuesday action will include a yacht, SOS life rings, and actors playing the role of the four mega-rich venture capitalists who recently formed a committee deceptively named “Californians for Reforms and Jobs Not Taxes Campaign” to defeat Proposition 30 on the November ballot.

Committee members include Floyd Kvamme, GOP donor and part of a committee fined by the Federal Elections Committee after the 2004 election; David Marquardt and Mark Stevens, venture capitalist donors to Mitt Romney and George W. Bush; and John Cox, fringe candidate for president in 2008, whose PAC has taken money from Phillip Morris.

“These amateur multimillionaires are playing with our state’s future like they play with their yachts and other toys,” said Malinda Markowitz, RN, and a co-president of the California Nurses Association/National Nurses United. “Why are they funneling hordes of cash against a campaign to protect our schools, our healthcare safety net, and other vital California services simply to avoid paying a little more of their fair share?”

“For me, an extra 2 percent or 3 percent in taxes is not going to make a bit of difference in the way that I live,” said Frank Jernigan, a retired Google software engineer and member of the Patriotic Millionaires for Fiscal Strength. Read more...

Carolyn is just one of the people nurses and the Campaign for a Healthy California has talked to about healthcare. Carolyn knew she was having a heart attack but was afraid to go to the hospital. She thought it might be better to die than to saddle her sons with the burden of her medical bills. Fortunately she survived, but Caroline is 135,000 dollars in debt to health “care”.

The audience at our Town Hall meeting to discuss Medicare for All was distressed by Carolyn’s story, but not entirely shocked. Nurses are hearing many of these kinds of stories as we travel through California asking the public to “Tell Us Where it Hurts.”

Nurses and the Campaign for a Healthy California are traveling in a bus to promote Medicare for All. Along the way we are doing health screenings in the communities we visit. We’re asking the public to “Tell Us Where It Hurts” with regard to their healthcare.

Here Joan Potts and Myra DeTate tell us about their struggle to obtain health care. Interviews are part of the Campaign for a Healthy California and Nurses Campaign to Heal America.

Across the country and throughout California, people are being denied healthcare. People have lost their homes, their retirement, even their lives due to healthcare costs and lack of care. Now Californians are saying enough is enough.

Some people thought the Affordable Care Act, also known as Healthcare Reform, would solve the problem. But the ACA continues the system of profit-based care and would force people to buy insurance without controls on insurance costs.

Now California has the opportunity to set the standard of care for our country by adopting a single payer Medicare for all model of healthcare. The Campaign for a Healthy California (CHC) believes everyone has a right to care. Join students, nurses, doctors, seniors, faith-based communities, small businesspeople, people of all backgrounds and ethnicities as we come together in CHC for a better California, and a healthy tomorrow.

Posted on YouTube by Debbie Day, she says, “This is a song I wrote for a church talent show. My roommate and I got to perform it at our college’s “guitars unplugged” performance. It was lots of fun! By the way, we really are registered nurses. Please, tell me what ya think!”

Lyrics: You got a scratch and you need help stat! Mmm boy, we got a bandaid that’ll fix it like that! You’ve been complaining of that aching in your tummy, well we’ve got some tums—that even taste yummy.

If you’ve got a sprain, hey look I’ve got some ice and if you need some c-p-r, my lips, they taste so nice,
And if you’ve got a cold despite everything you’ve tried, well give you a shot, right in your back side.
If you’re? feeling down, cause your achin’ in your neck, we’ll stick you with an IV once or twice, what the heck!
We are caring, here have a laxative. We are sharing, bed pans are superlative!

We’ve got lots of drugs we’re happy to provide, their effects will take you on a magic carpet ride. A whole new world!

Just one little poke and you’ll float far far away, here comes a little pinch, oh? wups! I missed the vein, oh well!
We are caring, if you start to choke, we are sharing, we’ll shove a tube down your throat…

So next time that you’re sick and you don’t know what’s wrong, we can probe your membranes with a cold, sharp, metal prong

And you’ll know? Read more...

More than three million embattled British nurses and other public employees were on strike (11/30/2011) to protest attacks by the British government on pensions and retirement security.

Like their U.S. counterparts, British officials want to slash public worker pensions to cut public deficits — even though, like Social Security in the U.S., British pension funds are financially sound.

As the 19 unions, representing nurses, other healthcare workers, teachers, and other public employees say, the government position is “pay more, work longer, get less.”

“These plans are just a cynical move to raise £4 billion to pay down the deficit caused by the bankers. Instead of raiding the pensions of hard working public service workers, why not impose a tiny transaction tax on the banks instead — this would raise £20 billion a year?”

— Karen Jennings, assistant general secretary of UNISON, which represents tens of thousands of nurses and other healthcare worker.

In the U.S., National Nurses United is leading the call for a financial transaction tax on Wall Street. The tax would tax Wall Street to heal Main Street. Similar taxes are being proposed by workers around the world. Nurses are rallied to show their support for British nurses and workers whose pensions are in jeopardy.
