Brian Goldman: Doctors Make Mistakes. Can We Talk About That?

By Nurse Talk | on November 25, 2012
Posted in: Blog, Charge Nurse's Favorites, Must See Video

We found this recently on Dr. Frank Lipman’s health & wellness web site.

Every doctor makes mistakes. But, says physician Brian Goldman, medicine’s culture of denial (and shame) keeps doctors from ever talking about those mistakes, or using them to learn and improve. Telling stories from his own long practice, he calls on doctors to start talking about being wrong.

Nurses and Teachers Fight Wealthy Opposition to Proposition 30

By California Nurses Association | on August 25, 2012

For California’s Future: Vote YES on Proposition 30!

California nurses, teachers, and responsible business individuals paid a visit to the posh St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco to shine a spotlight on the secretive wealthy donors who are bankrolling the campaign to defeat Proposition 30.

The Tuesday action will include a yacht, SOS life rings, and actors playing the role of the four mega-rich venture capitalists who recently formed a committee deceptively named “Californians for Reforms and Jobs Not Taxes Campaign” to defeat Proposition 30 on the November ballot.

Committee members include Floyd Kvamme, GOP donor and part of a committee fined by the Federal Elections Committee after the 2004 election; David Marquardt and Mark Stevens, venture capitalist donors to Mitt Romney and George W. Bush; and John Cox, fringe candidate for president in 2008, whose PAC has taken money from Phillip Morris.

“These amateur multimillionaires are playing with our state’s future like they play with their yachts and other toys,” said Malinda Markowitz, RN, and a co-president of the California Nurses Association/National Nurses United. “Why are they funneling hordes of cash against a campaign to protect our schools, our healthcare safety net, and other vital California services simply to avoid paying a little more of their fair share?”

“For me, an extra 2 percent or 3 percent in taxes is not going to make a bit of difference in the way that I live,” said Frank Jernigan, a retired Google software engineer and member of the Patriotic Millionaires for Fiscal Strength. Read more…

Uninsured Fresno Woman Has Heart Attack: Thinks it Might be Better to Die Than Be Treated

By National Nurses United | on July 22, 2012
    Posted in: Must See Video

Carolyn is just one of the people nurses and the Campaign for a Healthy California has talked to about healthcare. Carolyn knew she was having a heart attack but was afraid to go to the hospital. She thought it might be better to die than to saddle her sons with the burden of her medical bills. Fortunately she survived, but Caroline is 135,000 dollars in debt to health “care”.

The audience at our Town Hall meeting to discuss Medicare for All was distressed by Carolyn’s story, but not entirely shocked. Nurses are hearing many of these kinds of stories as we travel through California asking the public to “Tell Us Where it Hurts.”

Everybody In, Nobody Out: The Campaign for a Healthy California

By California Nurses Association | on June 11, 2012
Posted in: Blog, Must See Video

Across the country and throughout California, people are being denied healthcare. People have lost their homes, their retirement, even their lives due to healthcare costs and lack of care. Now Californians are saying enough is enough.

Some people thought the Affordable Care Act, also known as Healthcare Reform, would solve the problem. But the ACA continues the system of profit-based care and would force people to buy insurance without controls on insurance costs.

Now California has the opportunity to set the standard of care for our country by adopting a single payer Medicare for all model of healthcare. The Campaign for a Healthy California (CHC) believes everyone has a right to care. Join students, nurses, doctors, seniors, faith-based communities, small businesspeople, people of all backgrounds and ethnicities as we come together in CHC for a better California, and a healthy tomorrow.
