Casey and Dan visit with an RN from San Francisco’s St. Luke’s Hospital. The hospital has recently been under fire for discriminatory hiring practices. This is yet another issue that has plagued the hospital since Sutter Health took it over.

Later in the show we visit with RN consultant and inspirational speaker Terri Tate. Terri introduces a very sensitive topic known as “lateral violence,” or nurse-on-nurse violence. This is a very interesting and important conversation you won’t want to miss.

Our good friend Donna Smith from the National Nurses United D.C. office checks in with us on all things Capitol Hill. Donna is always a wealth of information and stresses the importance of the upcoming elections. One that stands out for us is the re-election of California Senator Barbara Boxer. Senator Boxer has been an outstanding friend and  advocate for nurses in California as well as across the country.

Later in the show Casey and Dan talk with our “former” student nurse and now full-fledged RN–Bryan Lo. Bryan has passed the California State Boards and is now looking for work. Bryan has such a great spirit as he listens to Casey put the fear of God in him about what he might expect as he embarks on his new career. Thanks Bryan for being such a good sport!

VW THING

So now we know…Dan’s search for the perfect THING is over and he is now the proud owner of a 1973 VW THING. For some of us who were around to witness the “roll out” of this fabulous das auto—it is really exciting to see the THING is as adorable as we remember. OK, a few scratches and scrapes —ALRIGHT—big dents and 240,000 miles later—she’s still a gem!! Stay safe Dan and here’s hoping you have AAA.

Beth talks about the recent ruling by a Superior Court judge that stopped the walk-out of over 12,000 UC Medical Center RNs. The RNs have been trying to call attention to the fact that UC Medical Centers (most notably U.C. Davis in Sacramento) have not been complying with the California RN-to-Patient Ratio law. The bill was passed over 10 years ago and mandates hospitals in California limit the number of patients per shift nurses can safely treat. A recent study proved that the bill does save lives. This is important stuff for all of us to know.

AND CAN WE TALK? Yes we can and we are talking about the POWER OF REST by Dr. Matthew Edlund. Dr. Edlund’s book is really a different approach to sleep and he makes a distinction between SLEEP AND REST. He finds that many people are not just sleep deprived they are REST deprived and there is a BIG DIFFERENCE. ALSO WITH US IS RN Janet Izzo. Janet is a Minneapolis RN who has written a book called Hotel Hennepin (named after the Hennepin County Hospital where Janet works). In the newly released book Janet chronicles her career working in a large county hospital as a staff and charge nurse on the obstetrics unit.
