  • RN Jane Sandoval on Threatened Closure of St. Luke’s in San Francisco Show 456

    Nurse Talk August 3, 2012
    Play

RN Jane Sandoval from San Francisco’s St. Luke’s Hospital joins us to talk about the proposed new 555-bed mega hospital that Sutter Healthcare Corp wants to build. Sounds nice doesn’t it? It is if you don’t know the move to consolidate services and locate a hospital so far away from the communities that need it the most. The new hospital would force closure of St. Luke’s, the City’s mainstay for medical services for lower income populations.

First of all it would be a SIN if St. Lukes were to close. I am an RN, and St. Lukes is the closest hospital to my home. I am fortunate to have 2 health insurance providers via my employer and my spouses. I have choices where most don’t. However, everytime I have ever used St. Lukes, it’s always been visiting their ER. The nurses there are amazing. They have been wonderful to my family and I when we’ve had emergent health issues. CPMC would have been too far away to go for the situations we were in, and SFGH is for those who really need it. In my opinion, they should open another hospital in our area to serve the community, rather than the Cathedral Hill area.
Jane, I applaude you for your tireless effort that you have provided for this cause. You not only do it for those you work with, but more importantly for our community!
Geographically St. Lukes would be perfect for me to travel to work; but because of the nonsense Sutter Health is pulling, it made me not work for them. Instead I work for a competitor of theirs with a very, very strong union. I have to travel a bit more, but at least I know we’re not driving out anyone in our community and I know my union will protect me.
        Good luck Jane!
