Nurse Talk spoke with RN Carole Rodgers last week. (See show 219, December 27, 2009) Carole works at the Alameda County Medical Center and has recently been active in the fight to keep San Leandro Hospital open. The hospital is now run by Sutter Health Group who is trying to close it. Closing facilities that serve the “underserved” is a pattern that is practiced by Sutter.

Sutter Health has numerous ties to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (the Mormons). Sutter was founded by a member of the church’s Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, Quentin Cook. As most of us know, the Mormon Church pumped millions of dollars into the effort to pass Proposition 8, the ballot initiative that banned gay marriage. Well, some of that money came directly from Warren J. Kirk, CEO of Sutter East Bay Hospitals INCLUDING San Leandro Hospital. Kirk contributed $500 toward the passage of Proposition 8. This begs the question: Why is a man who apparently doesn’t like gays much allowed to run a public hospital that must, by law, serve everyone regardless of sexual orientation?
